AITE fuel tax rates will change for October 1, 2022

Provincial fuel tax rates will change on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Please ensure you have the correct rates reflected on your Back Office system before any transactions are processed on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Wiz-Tec would like to remind all our clients in Alberta of the upcoming change to the provincial fuel tax rates for gasoline and diesel products as outlined by the Fuel Tax Act special notice Vol. 1 No. 45 : Collection of Alberta Fuel Tax [September 21, 2022] and on the Fuel tax and tobacco tax rate chart [September 22, 2022] from the Government of Alberta.

This change should be done after site closure on Friday, September 30, 2022 and before re-opening on Saturday, October 1, 2022.  For 24/7 sites, the change should be done on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 12:01am. After updating the tax exemption rates, all POS systems should be restarted. Please see instructions below. Per the notice, the exemption tax rates should be set back to 0.045 to provide proper fuel tax exemptions to your customers:

We have created a video tutorial on how to make these changes. Please see it embedded below, or click on this link to see it. There is also a written step-by-step guide below. If you still have questions, please feel free to give our service department a call at 1-866-361-7846 and our technicians will be happy to help you.

How to change exemption tax rates in your Back Office

Changing Gasoline & Diesel Exemption Rates:

  1. Open the Back Office program on your system and log in.
  2. Go to the ‘Edit Products’ tab in the top navigation menu.
  3. Select your first grade of gasoline (e.x. Regular Gas)
  4. Go to the ‘Exemption rate‘ field and change the value from 0 to 0.045. Make sure you use 0.045, not 0.45.
  5. Ensure the ‘Exemption type‘ field is set to 111-Fuel
  6. Ensure the ‘Gov Item Code‘ field is set to F1 **Please note that the ‘Gov Item Code’ field should be set to F2 for diesel and F1 for gasoline products.**
  7. Press the check mark to save and select ‘yes‘ on the confirmation popup.
  8. Select your next grade of gasoline (e.x. Mid-Grade Gas) and repeat the process with all grades of gasoline as well as diesel.
  9. Once finished, press ‘Refresh‘ and check that the exemption rates for each grade reflect the rate of 0.045.
  10. To finalize the changes, go to your iPOS system, go to the ‘Home‘ tab, then the ‘System Functions‘ tab, and press the ‘Reload Vars‘ button to update all the tax rates. Do this for your primary till first, then for any secondary tills and Back Office systems. **If your system does not have a ‘Reload Vars’ button, you must restart main till. After that is completed, restart any secondary tills and/or Back Offices at the site.

Please note that this video uses $0.13 (13 cents) instead of $0.045 (4.5 cents). However, the procedure will be the same.
